The chemical process of oxidation requires two components: a so-called electron donor and an electron acceptor.
The electron donor is the substance that oxidizes. During the chemical process, it gives off electrons. In the case of rust, it is iron.
The electron acceptor is usually oxygen. It accepts the electrons from the donor.
When iron rusts, the following happens: Oxygen meets iron and takes two electrons from it. This process alone does not harm the iron. A thin layer of iron oxide forms. This layer protects the iron from further destruction.
If moisture, i.e. water, comes into play, the oxygen does not combine with the iron but reacts with the water molecules. The iron then wants to compensate for the loss of electrons in the water and releases atoms into the water.
