Rust can be a serious issue for your 4WD vehicle over time. These vehicles are designed to go off road and be driven through mud, water and sand for your enjoyment.
Unfortunately, this can cause rust on the vehicle, even a brand new vehicle. So it’s important to clean and maintain the vehicle after each outing. Failing to do so can leave the vehicle in poor condition with this type of damage and repairing it can be expensive. If you see signs such as bubble paint, surface rust or corrosion on or under the car, it’s time to act.
Ways to protect from rust
There are a number of ways to successfully protect your vehicle from rust damage. These include lanolin, electronic rust protection. While they can work well, they can not be effective as you would like at times and take a lot of work to apply.
The first and most basic step is to thoroughly wash the vehicle when you have returned from your off-roading adventures. A local hand car wash can be useful using spray jets to get under and on the vehicle. This with a soap brush is a good start to removing the mud and saltwater deposited on the vehicle.
Also, make sure there’s no water sitting in the vehicle. This includes the ute tray and/or footwell inside. Also check the chassis, spoilers, gutters and wheel wells.
Once your car is washed and clean you can look at applying a rust preventative product or having the car coated with the product professionally.

It’s always advisable to continually look after your 4WD even when the protection is applied. Continued high use in salt water for instance can potentially push the limits on the protective coating, particularly if the vehicle is not thoroughly cleaned after.
